The Knowledge Intended Parents Need
For those who wish to become parents but have encountered some type of roadblock, whether it is a biological or social one, surrogacy offers a solution. Choosing to create a family in this way is a life-altering experience, not only for the intended parent or parents, but for the woman who offers to become a surrogate.
The road to a happy ending through surrogacy can seem a bit daunting in the beginning, but working with an established and professional surrogacy agency is the best first step for a successful journey. It’s important that both the surrogate mother and the intended parents are knowledgeable about the process and have a solid understanding of their financial and legal obligations toward those with whom they have established the surrogacy agreement. At the Center for Surrogate Parenting, we understand not only the importance of secure agreements; we also work hard to support the emotional well-being of the intended parent or parents, the surrogate, their families, and the future child. Each and every step is crucial, and every bit of surrogate parent information provided is accurate.
Because we’re backed by nearly 40 years of surrogacy experience, we can offer an extensive array of resources and knowledge.
One of the most important aspects of surrogacy is the match between the intended parent or parents and the surrogate mother. There are extensive and varied types of personalities, religious beliefs, moralities, and cultural backgrounds that we take into account. Our success with matching intended parents and surrogate mothers begins with a thorough screening of both parents and surrogate. Once the screenings are complete, both the surrogate and intended parents create a profile. We provide intended parent profiles to the potential surrogate mom, who chooses those she’d like to work with in the surrogacy. The parents look over the profiles of the surrogate moms who’ve chosen them, and choose the surrogate they feel most closely matches their expectations.
Once the choices have been made, we assist both parties in setting up a face-to-face meeting. We help guide the intended parents and surrogate mother through the agreement process, and ensure everyone is happy with the specific details.
If there are any issues during the surrogacy process, we address those concerns quickly. Should there be a change of heart or the match is not working as it was expected, we’ll work with both parties to resolve the problem or start a new matching process if a solution cannot be identified. It is imperative that the match works well and everyone gets along. We don’t overlook problems—we solve them.
To ensure that both the intended parent or parents and the surrogate mother understand the legalities of the surrogacy agreement, and to protect the rights of all, including the future child, we work diligently to ensure all aspects of constitutionally protected parental rights as well as reproductive freedoms are met. The legal requirements of ethical surrogacy create a long and complicated list. We offer independent legal services through attorneys that have a third party reproduction history. It is important that both intended parents and surrogate mothers have independent legal counsel to ensure their rights are protected.
Some states allow surrogacy, others do not. There are counties that have strict laws governing surrogacy, even though they’re located in a state that has no laws against it. We work with intended parents from all over the world, but all of the women who offer their services as surrogate mothers through CSP, reside in U.S. states where the laws permit surrogacy. In Canada, surrogacy is not illegal. Although it is illegal to pay a woman for surrogacy services, reimbursing her for reasonable expenses resulting from the surrogacy is legal. Laws involving surrogacy can change, and there is little evidence that they won’t continue to do so. Our job is to stay informed of the laws in each state where our surrogate mothers live, in addition to understanding the laws in the home state or country of the intended parents, so that we can ensure all legalities are met.
