The Basics of Surrogate Prescreening

Surrogate prescreening leads to a successful surrogacy journey for all

When you’re preparing to start or grow your family using surrogacy, you don’t want to leave anything to chance. That’s why surrogate prescreening is so important. This process ensures that a woman is physically and psychologically ready to be a surrogate. Knowing that your surrogate has completed this screening can bring you peace of mind as an intended parent.

The Center for Surrogate Parenting has a rigorous surrogate screening process to ensure that gestational surrogacy is effective and rewarding for everyone. Read on to learn more about our screening process and how it helps make parenthood possible.

Passing our surrogate prescreening is the first step

Two of our goals as a surrogacy agency are to ensure that surrogacy is safe for our surrogates and successful for our intended parents. Our surrogate screening process helps our team achieve both goals.

When a woman is interested in becoming a surrogate at our agency, we ask that she meets the following criteria before applying.

  • Have a body mass index (BMI) no greater than 31
  • Be between the ages of 21 and 41
  • Have had and be raising at least one child
  • Be a non-smoker
  • Have a source of income other than government assistance
  • Be free of medications for anxiety and depression for at least a year under doctor guidance

A woman can complete an application if she meets all these surrogate prescreening requirements. Our team will then review her application and let her know if she’s eligible to begin the rest of our surrogate screening process.

Medical and psychological screenings are next in the surrogate screening process

Once a potential surrogate makes it past the first step of the surrogate prescreening process, she’ll need to go through a few more steps. Each step is designed to determine whether the woman is physically and psychologically ready to carry a surrogate pregnancy.

  • Send over prenatal and delivery records from all previous pregnancies.
  • Submit medical evaluation and initial paperwork from personal doctor.
  • Share the last menstrual cycle start date.
  • Provide the results of a current Pap smear.
  • Visit a mental health professional for psychological screening.
  • See a fertility doctor for bloodwork and an ultrasound.
  • Undergo blood and urine screening for social diseases. The woman’s partner must also undergo this screening.

If everything checks out, the woman can become a surrogate in our program. From there, she can move forward with making the dream of parenthood come true for men and women like you.
